GIYC Supports Breast Cancer Research
The GIYC Children's Madrassah held a "Pink day" in support of the National
Breast Cancer Foundation on Saturday, 11 August 2007.
The day was filled with pink ribbons, pink clothes, and pink cupcakes, all
in aid of breast cancer research and support of those who have breast
cancer. We wanted to demonstrate the importance of this worhty foundation
and the work they do and also encourage our students to realise how, as
Muslims, we can play a vital role in the community, supporting projects
that help and benefit all.
Alhamdulillah, we managed to raise over $250 through our sale of ribbons and
cupcakes. And even though this amount seems little, it was by far one of the
most valuable experiences we could have given our children and their
families. May Allah reward all those who supported this important venture.
We appreciate the opportunity to give our children life experiences that
have great meaning.

Evaluation of school holiday program
Alhamdilillah all the children had a great time in participating in our exciting school holiday program. The highlight of the craft day was the slimy goop that the children loved digging their hands right into it. So of them loved it so much that they took it home. The children also had the chance to be creative when their were decorating muffins with assorted lollies. And the best part was eating them, yummmmy!
The sports day went very well also, Alhamdilillah. The children had the chance to release their energy through the fun activities that where set out such as going through the obstacle course. The children wanted to race each other to see who can get through the obstacle course the fastest. The children loved participating in the bowling competition Alhamdilillah they all done very well. We hope that the children keep the habit of being active and participating in many sports.

Ladies Winter Warmers Pyjama Party 2007
This was our 4th Ladies Pyjama party and what a fun night! Not even the cold, wet and rainy weather could put a dampen on this fun filled night.
We would like to say “thankyou” to all those ladies who were brave enough to leave their homes.
It didn’t take long for the ladies to warm up with our most popular game “the sleeping bag race”, and also some delicious home made soup.
During the night we had some exciting games, an inspirational talk, an auction and also prizes for the best PJ’s and not to forget a yummy dinner and an even more yummy dessert.
It was a great and entertaining night enjoyed by all that attended.
If you missed out this year be quick to get your tickets early next year because this night is one not to be missed.

GIYC Madrassah Picnic
The GIYC Children’s Madrassah held its second family picnic, and Alhamdulillah it was a wonderful success. Tabarakallah, we could not have asked for better weather. Allah had truly blessed us with a perfect Sunday at the park.
Held on Sunday, 2oth May 2007, the day started with great surprise, when some brothers arrived at the picnic spot, to find that it was packed and most areas had already been reserved (obviously a very popular picnic area). Fortunately, we managed to find a nice, secluded area, where we could set up our BBQs, games, gazebos and everything else that makes for a big event.

The day was filled with beautiful sunshine, good food (not to mention the variety of chocolate cakes), lots of laughs, great fun with all the games and races, fun at the playground (the flying fox being the most popular), wonderful company, all topped off with a tug-o-war unlike any we had seen before. The longest tug-o-war made up of the biggest and toughest men, our picnic had to offer. The feud was so grand, it took a few attempts to find out who would reign supreme. What fun! Mind you, the women had their game of tug-o-war too (somewhat hidden and awkward), but the laughs (not to mention the abayas) got in the way of the strength and proved to be rather detriment of the tug-o-war. Anyway, it was worth a try!
Many thanks to all who helped and of course thanks to all the families who joined us on the day, and made it such a wonderful event. For those who were not able to attend, be sure not to miss it when it comes around next year, inshaAllah.
Jazakallahu khairan!

Poor & Needy Clothing Drive
Recently at GIYC we were approached by the Brothers of Ausaid to help them in collecting new & used clothes to send overseas to Syria. These clothes would go on to help the thousands of poor & needy displaced Iraqi people that now reside there. Alhamdulilah we filled a truck full & hand delivered it to Ausaid. We have also recently announced to the community that we have become a clothing depot of the well coordinated clothing drive of Ausaid which serves to help local & international needy people. You can either donate clothes to the centre which will be picked up regularly from there or you may take it direct to Ausaid’s storage centre. More details are found on the poster. A big thank you to all those who have & continue to help in this project.

Australian Muslim Mentoring Program
We commenced Week one at Robert Townson High School on the 19th of July & it left both of us mentors (Ummu and I) completely overwhelmed, since we were not expecting so many Muslim students. We walked into a class filled of 62 students, who were all obviously very unaware of what the class was about and what exactly we were going to do with them. Nevertheless, they were keen to get started and find out. After the introductions we then split the boys and the girls into their own classrooms & begun the program. There were many questions and after settling in with classroom rules & short games of getting to know each other, everyone was quite relaxed and comfortable. Both the girls & boys were very open and demonstrated that they were willing to see this program through to the end.

We looked at the meaning of “respect” and this was our first lesson; very relevant and hopefully will have some impact.
I am looking forward to a very productive and Insha Allah, successful year with the Students. With many different lessons, events, activities and guests lined up, I have no doubt that it is going to be a program worth the effort and time. I pray that Allah, The Almighty, blesses this program and continues to guide us on our mission to a brighter and more Islamic future for our leaders of tomorrow, Ameen.

Ladies Senior First Aid Course
On the 24th June 2007 a group of 12 ladies were eager to awake early on a Sunday morning to participate in a Senior First aid course held at Giyc.
A big “thankyou” to sister Mecca who ran the course through “The Royal Life Saving Society”.
This day was very beneficial for all the ladies that attended because it has now given us the opportunity to help someone who is in need of basic medical assistance.
Congratulations to all the ladies that passed their exam and have now received their certificates.
Well Done Ladies!
BOYZ Will Be BOYZ
'Well the heading says it all. Amongst all the activities, competitions and tonnes of prizes, there was not a moment of peace. These boys aged between 4 and 12 made the most of what was a super fun night with many fathers watching on as their sons let loose. As soon as the hooter sounded the Game Coordinators took to their position and each team began their activity with much hype.
With the younger boys team starting off on Balloon Bust, and the older boys manouvering their way through Obstacle Relay, there was no turning back , all players were now pumped and trying desperately to outdo each other. However among the favourites were the Hang Ten, which only the fittest managed to make their way across, and Shoot Out where poor Shareef proved a formidable target. Everyone including the fathers joined in on the action. And what about Zaky, did he get a reception or what? Im sure he will be resting from all the hugs. Stay Tune for Boyz will be Boyz ."

Liverpool Youth Cup
Sunday 22 April saw the inaugural Liverpool Youth Cup Tournament play out to an audience of over 250 players and spectators.
Liverpool Youth Cup was conceived late last year as an initiative to support national Youth Week with the aim of making a positive impact on the youth of the Liverpool region.
The tournament was designed to breakdown and overcome, cultural barriers that exist within the community by promoting harmony, understanding, communication and acceptance. The focus of the tournament was to create a culture of religious tolerance and mutual respect amongst the youth.
Twenty-four teams went head to head to battle it out for the honour of taking home the inaugural Liverpool Youth Cup trophy. It was a day of fierce competition in which all teams and players displayed exceptional character and sportsmanship.
In the end, ‘The Eagles’, a team of Serbian background, took out the title after a passionate penalty shoot-out against ‘Team Mahdi’ a local team of Iranian origin.
At the end of regulation time it was a 3-3 draw between The Eagles and Team Mahdi. The Eagles clinched the title 3-1 in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.
Bilal El Hayek, 2006 Australian karate champion, and NRL Bulldogs star Hazem El Masri made special appearances at the event, which really boosted all ready high energy levels amongst the players.
Liverpool Youth Cup organisers felt that the day was a stunning success. Every participant displayed exemplary form both on and off the field, ensuring that the aims of the day were realised.
Whilst all participants entered the comp as competitors, whether they won or lost, everyone walked away with a greater appreciation for the rich diversity of cultures that is the cornerstone of our community.
Liverpool Youth Cup would not have been possible without the support of the events key sponsors: EMR Cranes, Human Appeal International, High-Tec Security Solutions and Football NSW.
Liverpool Youth Cup organisers thank them for their support, encouragement and overall, the significant contributions that they made in helping make the event an overwhelming success.
Liverpool Youth Cup was organised by Global Islamic Youth Centre in conjunction with Liverpool Council.

Boys Youth Camp
We heard nothing but great reports from the youth about this. The boys spent a jam packed weekend of camping along the beautiful beachside.
They had sausage sizzles and sand
wrestling as well as water balancing activities in the crystal
blue waters. It was a weekend to remember as the men have
commented. The boys also spent time being educated about
issue’s that are facing our youth, as well as Islamic lectures
from the elder brothers and not to forget the great prizes the
boys won. Look out for this camp in the future as it will
definitely be repeated!

GIYC Girls Pyjama Party
What a fun night for all! GIYC held its first Girl’s Pyjama Party on Saturday 2nd September, for girls aged between 5 and 11 years (a few eager mothers also rocked up to enjoy the fun too).
Coming from different backgrounds and being different ages didn’t hinder the 40 girls who attended, who dressed up in their cutest pyjamas and came clutching their pretty pillows ready for fun.
GIYC shura ladies led the girls through a rollercoaster of exciting games and activities, such as tug-of-war, sac races, Islamic quiz, balloon bust and limbo. Not to mention a yummy dinner, dessert and lollybags for all those who attended.
Everyone enjoyed the night, and we hope to make this event a yearly one inshAllah. All 40 tickets were sold at $25 each, with all profit going towards the GIYC Land project.

GIYC Brainstorming Session Getaway
The GIYC Shura escaped on the 12th of August, 2006 on a weekend getaway to the Dooralong Valley Resort.
The purpose of our getaway was for GIYC Shura to come together and set GIYC's direction for the next Quarter. This was achieved on the weekend. We set clear strategic goals and set a action plan in place to achieve these goals.
We also had the opportunity to reenergise and bond closer with one another.
